White Cloud Mountain Minnows (Tanicthys albonubes) are a species of small fish native to China. They have also been introduced to Colombia and Madagascar.
They were once thought to be extinct in their native range but in 1980 a small population was discovered living on Hainan Island in Southern China.
Habitat
In the wild, White Cloud Mountain Minnows inhabit clean freshwater streams and ponds. They enjoy cooler, more temperate conditions than a lot of other fish in the Tropical Aquarium trade.
They are a gregarious shoaling fish.
Sexual dimorphism is slight but noticeable. The Male generally has brighter colours and a slimmer body, and the Male's dorsal and anal fins are wide and fan-shaped whereas those of the Female are triangular and wedge-shaped. Females also present a whiter, distended abdomen
A comfortable temperature for these fish is between 10°C - 24°C.
Size
Our specimens currently measure approx. 2cm - 3cm
This species' maximum size typically reaches approx. 4cm
Aquarium
We recommend an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 40 - 60 Litres. The more fish you have, the more space they will require in which to thrive.
These are very peaceful fish that do well in a community aquarium with other fish of similar size and temperament.
White Cloud Mountain Minnows thrive when in a group of at least 6 fish as they are a shoaling fish, and more members of the shoal make them feeler safer and behave with more confidence.
The aquarium should have plants on the sides and at the back, including floating plants for them to hide in. The centre of the tank should be left as an open swimming area. Use sand or fine gravel as the substrate.
These fish enjoy a moderate level of water flow as it better replicates their natural habitat.
The tank should be well established to avoid any surprise changes in water parameters that may upset or be otherwise detrimental to the fish.
Feed with small flake, granule, or small frozen meaty foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and mosquito larvae.
pH levels should fall between the 6 - 8 range.
Hardness should fall between 2 - 20 dGH
Behaviour
This peaceful fish gets along with most species of similar size. As with most shoaling fish, they look more impressive the bigger their shoal is. They can be easily housed in a community tank so long as there is nothing too aggressive with them that can cause them to become skittish and stressed.
As stated above, they require slightly cooler water temperatures so please take care to choose tank mates that share this requirement.
This is a freshwater species - Do not put them in a marine / saltwater aquarium.
