Threadfin Rainbowfish
Threadfin Rainbowfish
The Threadfin Rainbowfish (Iriatherina werneri) is a small species of Rainbowfish native to Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.
Only the males have the long flowing find, but the females are no less eye catching in their own right.
Habitat
In the wild, these Rainbowfish live in swamps or slow flowing and vegetation-dense waterways in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia.
A comfortable temperature for these fish is between 25°C - 30°C.
Size
Our specimens currently measure approx. 2.5cm - 3cm
This species' maximum size typically reaches approx. 4cm
Aquarium
We recommend an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 110 Litres.
These are peaceful fish that do well in a community aquarium with other fish of similar size and temperament. If you wish to try breeding them you should consider housing them in a species-only tank.
Threadfin Rainbowfish thrive when in a group of at least 6 fish, with a ration of 2 Females per 1 Male.
The tank should be well planted, as this is that this species prefers. For tank mates, be careful not to house with any fish that could be considered "fin nippers" as the males will become an obvious target.
These fish have small mouths so care should be taken to ensure they get enough food. This is especially important when housed with other, more greedy fish.
The tank should be well established to avoid any surprise changes in water parameters that may upset or be otherwise detrimental to the fish.
Water should be soft and somewhat acidic.
pH levels should fall between the 5.5 - 7 range.
Hardness should fall between 5 - 15 dGH
Behaviour
These peaceful fish pose no threat to other fish, but if too many Males are housed together in too small an area, they may display to try and curry the favour of the group's Females. Keep an eye on this as the less dominant Male(s) could become the target of bullying.
This is a freshwater species - Do not put them in a marine / saltwater aquarium.
