Odessa Barbs (Pethia padamya) are a species of Barb native to a remote area in central Myanmar.

Habitat

In the wild, Odessa Barbs make their homes in the Chindwin River and some small ponds in Central Myanmar.

Until recently this species was thought to be a hybrid occurring only in the aquarium trade, but have since been found living wild in Myanmar.

It is unknown how they originally made their way into home aquariums, but have since been reclassified as a separate species.

Male specimens of this species, when reaching adulthood, display a beautiful deep red stripe along the lateral line of their body, with females remaining a silvery orange.

A comfortable temperature for these fish is between 15°C - 25°C.

Size

Our specimens currently measure approx. 3cm - 4cm

This species' maximum size typically reaches approx. 7cm

Aquarium

We recommend an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 75 Litres.

These are peaceful fish that do well in a community aquarium with other fish of similar size and temperament.

Odessa Barbs thrive when in a group of at least 6 fish as they are a schooling fish, and more members of the shoal make them feeler safer and behave with more confidence.

The aquarium should be well planted, as this is what this species prefers - try to add some floating plants for them to hide in. This will better replicate their natural environment.

They tend to look best in a properly aquascaped tank, where their shoaling behaviour and vibrant colours make a beautiful centre piece.

The tank should be well established to avoid any surprise changes in water parameters that may upset or be otherwise detrimental to the fish.

Feed with small flake, granule, or small frozen meaty foods. They tend to be quite greedy eaters, so take care to not overfeed.

pH levels should fall between the 6 - 7 range.
Hardness should fall between 4 - 10 dGH

Behaviour

This peaceful fish gets along with most species of similar size. Do not house them with tank mates that have long fins, as they are notorious fin nippers.

This is a freshwater species - Do not put them in a marine / saltwater aquarium.
