Lampeye (Poropanchax normani) also known as "Norman's Lampeye Killifish" are a species of Killifish native to savannah regions in multiple African countries.
These include; Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, and Togo.
Habitat
In the wild, Lampeye make their homes in small streams and rivers, inhabiting the fringes and banks where there is dense vegetation.
This means in aquarium settings they require heavily planted tanks and gentle water flow.
Male specimens of this species have longer and more pointed fins, compared to the Female's shorter rounded fins.
A comfortable temperature for these fish is between 22°C - 26°C.
Size
Our specimens currently measure approx. 2cm - 3cm
This species' maximum size typically reaches approx. 4cm
Aquarium
We recommend an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 40 Litres.
These are very peaceful fish that do well in a community aquarium with other fish of similar size and temperament.
Lampeye thrive when in a group of at least 10 fish as they are a schooling fish, and more members of the shoal make them feeler safer and behave with more confidence.
The aquarium must be heavily planted with a gentle rate of water flow. They also enjoy bog wood and other natural features. This will better replicate their natural environment.
To bring out the beautiful blue colour in these fish's eyes, use darker coloured substrate and dimmer lighting.
The tank should be well established to avoid any surprise changes in water parameters that may upset or be otherwise detrimental to the fish.
Feed with small frozen meaty foods such as daphnia, white mosquito larvae, or cyclops. You can also incorporate small flake food into their diet, as long as they are fed frozen meaty food regularly as well.
pH levels should fall between the 6.5 - 7.5 range.
Hardness should be anywhere up to 15 dGH
Behaviour
This fish gets along with most other small, peaceful species. As with most shoaling fish, they look more impressive the bigger their shoal is.
They feel most comfortable in shoals with at least 10 members, and their natural behaviour will be displayed when there is plenty of plants for them to hide in.
Do not house them with any tank mates that may display aggression of any kind, as they are easily intimidated which leads to stress. If in doubt, keep them in a species only setup.
This is a freshwater species - Do not put them in a marine / saltwater aquarium.
