The Denison Barb (Dawkinsia denisonii) sometimes called the "Red Line Torpedo Barb" is a species of Barb native to India.
Habitat
In the wild, these fish live in fast flowing hill streams in India. They congregate around the base of waterfalls and fast flowing rapids which means they need extremely well oxygenated water to thrive.
A comfortable temperature for these fish is between 18°C - 25°C.
Size
Our specimens currently measure approx. 3cm - 5cm
This species' maximum size typically reaches approx. 15cm
Aquarium
We recommend an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 300 Litres.
These fish require a specialist setup to best match their natural environment. They require fast flowing water, with a high dissolved oxygen content. The tank should preferably be at least 4 feet in length, with special care and attention to regular water changes to keep their habitat clean and fresh.
Powerheads and spray bars should be used to create the desired "splash down" effect if you do not have a specialised aquascaped tank with a waterfall.
The edges of the tank should be well planted to provide plenty of hiding spaces for these fish.
The tank should be well established to avoid any surprise changes in water parameters that may upset or be otherwise detrimental to the fish.
Feed with algae flake, sinking pellets, and frozen meaty foods.
pH levels should fall between the 6.8 - 7.8 range.
Hardness should fall between 5 - 25 dGH
Behaviour
Denison Barbs should be kept in groups of 6 or more, as a shoal smaller than this can cause them to become skittish and timid.
They can be added to a specialist community aquarium with tank mates that inhabit similar fast-flowing ecosystems. Do not house them with large predatory fish that may see them as prey.
This is a freshwater species - Do not put them in a marine / saltwater aquarium.
