The Endler's Guppy (Poecilia wingei) also called "Endler's Livebearer" is a species of small fish native to shallow streams, as well as the Campoma Lagoon, in northern Venezuela.

They are closely related to Common Guppies and can very easily cross breed.

These fish have been extensively selectively bred for the aquarium trade, so now come in a wide range of different colours and patterns, from matte to metalic. The wild type retains its distinctive black mark across the flank.

Habitat

In the wild, Endler's Guppies are found in a small area of northern Venezuela called the Paria Peninsula. They inhabit shallow forest streams and lagoons that are well shaded by overhanging vegetation.

Male specimens of this species are much more distinctive, displaying a wide range of colours and patterns. Males tend to be smaller, reaching an average maximum size of approx. 2.5cm in length. They also have a "Gonopodium" which is a modified fin that has evolved into a mating organ.

Females tend to be a dull grey with just a flourish of colour adorning their tail fins, if any. They also tend to be slightly larger, reaching a maximum size of approx. 4.5cm in length.

A comfortable temperature for these fish is between 24°C - 28°C.

Size

Our specimens currently measure approx. 2cm - 2.5cm

This species' maximum size typically reaches approx. 2.5cm

Aquarium

We recommend an aquarium with a minimum capacity of 40 Litres. The more fish you have, the more space they will require in which to thrive.

These are very peaceful fish that do well in a community aquarium with other fish of similar size and temperament. Try to keep more Females than Males, at a ratio of at least 2:1.

The aquarium should have plants, including floating plants for them to hide in.

Both captive bred and wild types are available in the aquarium trade, with the captive bred specimens displaying a wider range of colours and longer flowing fins. The captive specimens also tend to be slightly hardier, tolerating a wider range of water conditions.

The tank should be well established to avoid any surprise changes in water parameters that may upset or be otherwise detrimental to the fish.

Feed with flake, fine granules, small algae pellets, or frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and white mosquito larvae.

Due to their hardy disposition and readiness to breed, Endler's Guppies make an excellent starter fish.

pH levels should fall between the 7.2 - 8.5 range.
Hardness should fall between 12 - 25 dGH

Behaviour

These colourful and peaceful fish gets along with most species of similar size. They can be housed either in small groups or larger shoals, but they look more impressive the more you have.

They can be easily housed in a community tank so long as there is nothing too aggressive with them that can cause them to become skittish and stressed.

Endler's Guppies are live bearing fish and will readily breed. The optimum ratio for this is 2 - 4 Females to every 1 Male. Add some floating plants and let nature take its course.

This is a freshwater species - Do not put them in a marine / saltwater aquarium.
